THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER

Surprise Me is Sophie Kinsella's emotionally charged, witty new standalone novel about love and long-term relationship survival - and how those we think we know best can sometimes surprise us the most . . .

After being together for ten years, Sylvie and Dan have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, beautiful twin girls, and communicate so seamlessly, they finish each other's sentences. They have a happy marriage and believe they know everything there is to know about each other. Until it's casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another sixty-eight years... and panic sets in.

They quickly decide to create little surprises for each other, to keep their relationship fresh and fun. But in their pursuit of Project Surprise Me - anything from unexpected gifts to restaurant dates to photo shoots - mishaps arise with disastrous and comical results.

Gradually, the surprises turn to shocking discoveries. And when a scandal from the past is uncovered, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other after all...

I hate Sylvie! I almost didn’t continue with this book after the first 200 pages, I think it was only because I’d bought it that I felt I had to persevere. This is by far the worst Sophie Kinsella book I’ve ever read. The characters are 2 dimensional with no depth, Sylvie is really annoying and shallow and Dan is almost written as an afterthought, whereby you never really get to know him and his character. Given that these are the main character and not really caring about them either way makes it a hard going read! The initial plot centres around Sylvie and Dan realising that their marriage is possibly going to last around another 68 years and their reactions to that. I fully understand that Sylvie is supposed to be shallow, spoilt and clueless but it’s so annoying...hard to believe she’s a wife and mother when she needs to grow up so much!! It does get better (although a very obvious outcome to everyone other than Sylvie..) in the last 300 pages, although if you want my honest opinion...I wouldn’t bother and would skip this one.

I read loads of books but have never written a review until this one. This book touched my senses though and I felt compelled to write. The story of Dan and Sylvia is written perfectly (as Sophie’s books always are ... but what touched me was the story of marriage. Not all about finding new love but appreciating and maximising what you’ve got. Absolutely loved it !
