Description

Casey Affleck (Interstellar, Gone Baby Gone) stars as Lee, a man whose spare existence is suddenly ruptured when the death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler, Carol, The Wolf of Wall Street) forces him to return to the hometown he abandoned years before. Rocked by contact with his estranged ex-wife (Michelle Williams) and the revelation that Joe has made him guardian of his teenage son (Lucas Hedges), Lee is forced to face up to painful memories and new-found levels of responsibility as he reconnects with his family.

  • Sublime exploration of family grief

An extraordinarily powerful & deceptively simple portrayal of a man's struggle with grief and the impact both the event and his reaction impacts the world around no him. Wonderful performances, beautiful camerawork and an elegiac script brought together to create a real gem.

Honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's a bit of a pointless film - has absolutely no storyline...

  • Nothing Special

Because of all the awards and rave reviews I was really expecting something special. Usual overhype from Hollywood though... It was a fairly decent real life story but nothing particularly better than your average decent BBC or ITV drama and certainly comparing it against similar 'real life' dramas from the likes of Mike Leigh, Ken Loach, Alan Bleasdale, Stephen Poliakoff..etc.. it really doesn't even come close. Maybe it was just me but the characters had no depth or attachment to me either, so I didn't really care for any of them or engage with them.

I'd been looking forward to watching this for a long time but it is truly like nothing I have ever seen before. Casey Affleck is unbelievably believable in his portrayal of someone riddled by guilt and grief. But that performance is only made so much more stunning by the script. It's hard to describe. Just watch it. Thoroughly deserved its oscars.

My wife and I stopped watching - just didn't get involved in the characters. Maybe we'll try again sometime.

This really is a truly real film, great story, superb acting. Its darkly funny, heartbreaking, moving and a story that most of us, in part can relate with. There is no big stunts, no CGI, no Hollywood glitz, just a truly immersive story. It draws you in completely. Excellent.

My wife enjoyed this, but I did not. You really need to start with a synopsis & cast list, as I bet those critics did, otherwise it will take more than a third of the movie just to work out how the characters relate to each other, partly because the family is so wholly dysfunctional. When you get there this is an interesting study of PTSD, albeit a rather depressing one as his condition is not medically treated and he fails to make the progress his terminally ill brother presumably intended. It is not clear why the source of his PTSD is set up as a 'reveal' by the script but this is also a bit irritating.

i never write reviews for films but i feel that is film needed credit as i am the person who always reads reviews to see what others think. i would go as far to say that this is the best film i have seen all year, it has an excellent plot that is both heart breaking and warming. I cant reccomend it any higher.
