Description

Joining Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me 3 is Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker, co-creator of Comedy Central’s global phenomenon South Park and the Broadway smash The Book of Mormon. Parker voices the role of villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date.

  • A 'Kids Film’ But Not A Film For Kids

Nothing particularly adult in it - that's not what I mean, but it has absolutely no idea who its audience is. It feels like a movie 'written for parents', however without the clever humour that implies, but rather an endless slew of eighties references, which honestly makes it feel more 'written for grandparents' if anything. The three children have almost no roles at all - tacked on, less than ten minutes, and irrelevant to the plot (not even unhelpful, just not present at all, not even their reactions) - and even the Minions are relegated to the sidelines. Whenever the children are in the movie, it seems to be more of a reassurance to the adults ‘trying to be Mom’ that it'll all work out, rather than what it should be - speaking to the children about their experiences. It has no child POV whatsoever. There are so many moments where you'll ask 'But why is this happening?’ and I have no answer for it. For example - no spoiler - there is a lot of pigs involved, which you think would be analogous to the Minions. Nope. They're just there. It's not a completely abysmal film, but it's just completely devoid of any genuine heart or substance. People who really enjoyed the previous ones (particularly 2) may still enjoy it, but as a film in general, its lack of direction and knowledge of who is its audience, makes it fall terribly flat.

It is not really as funny as the first 2. The villain is pretty weird. Worth it for kids though.

Despite still being mostly entertaining and funny this films villain is cringey and shows the directors are running out of ideas or this series
