Written and directed by Martin Koolhoven, 'Brimstone' stars Dakota Fanning ('War of the Worlds', 'The Secret Life of Bees') and the Emmy-award winner Guy Pearce ('L.A. Confidential', 'Memento'), following a young woman’s epic quest for survival. Our heroine is Liz (Fanning), a young and beautiful woman who is being hunted by a vengeful preacher (Pearce) – a diabolical extremist and her nemesis. But Liz is a genuine survivor; she’s no victim but instead a woman of fearsome strength who responds with astonishing bravery to claim the better life she and her daughter deserve. Told in four chapters, 'Brimstone' is a suspenseful tale of guilt and retribution that unfolds at the end of the 19th century in the unforgiving American West.

  • Relentlessly bleak

Well crafted with good performances, but there is something quite unpleasant about the way in which the camera dwells on some of the more gory scenes (of which there are many). In some ways reminiscent of Tarantino’s work, but the main difference is that the latter’s films introduce moments of light humour which provide variety and an opportunity for the release of accumulated tension. This, on the other hand, follows a one dimensional theme of suffering, cruelty and despair. It left this viewer feeling disturbed and despondent.
  • Excellent

Wonderfully intelligent film. Casting brilliant - Guy Pearce, Clarice Van Houten, Emilia Jones, Dakota Fanning...all brilliant.
  • Good acting, Poor film!

A very slow burner from start to finish. Great countryside and sets but a poorley constructed storyline. Gore for the sake of gore and to put some context in the story, did not really work! Would not reccommend this film and would not have paid the rental if I had read a true review.

I enjoyed the film - excellent strong female character with the film moving along at a steady pace.
  • Outstanding

  • Mesmerizing

This without doubt one of most meserizing movies I have watched in a long time. Brilliant story telling, thought provoking, beautifully filmed, fantastic acting. By setting the story in the wild free West, fear, greed, dispair and exploitation of others - common in all of humaniity - can be freely displayed. I highly recommend this movie.

This a must see thriller, I watched this over a year ago on a plane and it stuck with me. Can't believe it's only just been released now. Amazing film.
  • Very good western

Ignore the title and the appalling poster artwork, both of which completely undersell what is imho the best western of the past year. Split into 4 non-linear chapters around the life of the main female protagonist- haunted and hunted by Guy Pearce (in a career best). Highly recommended.
