The U.S.S. Cygnus is perched precariously at the edge of a black hole -- the vast, empty nothingness where space and time end. Anything that crosses its border enters a universe of the complete unknown. And so begins a story that only Disney's film magicians could tell. A story of robots and humanoids. Of human genius and madness. And a spectacular descent into nature's ultimate mystery -- The Black Hole.

  • Slow start, but picks up towards the third act.

A decent movie with a great soundtrack and visuals.
  • So Underappreciated !!!!!

Saw this film as a child . Good to see another Golden Oldie on iTunes. Roddy McDowall steals the show as V.I.N.C.E.N.T., although again the casting has no weak link. The scientific basis is reasonable and the storyline, while obviously religious in tone, is not too preachy. A scene or two might be a bit much for smaller kids, but this film deserved more success and acclaim than it received. FIVE STARS AGAIN, APPLE!!! for unearthing this treasure.
  • Best John Barry soundtrack

Don't get me wrong this is a man who did bond but the opening theme and the voyage into the black hole is superb move over John William .
  • In, Through, and Beyond

Criminally underrated slice of 70s sci-fi, this is 20,000 Leagues under the Sea meets Star Wars. Yes, the story and dialogue has more cheddar than Dutch Edam (witness such clunkers as 'we're on a mission to find habitable life in outer space..') but the film boasts the USS Cygnus (a unique miles-long ship that looks like a glowing cathedral), a terrifically portentous tone, cool robot designs in the shape of the evil Maximilian and the R2-as-voiced-by-Roddy McDowell 'Vincent', and a darkly charismatic turn from Maximilian Schell as Nemo-alike Dr Hans Reinhart. And the behemoth that is the black hole itself still stands up to today's visual effects. In, through, and beyond...

  • An 80s classic, but not in HD?

No doubt this film only exists because Disney needed something to compete with Star Wars. Despite that, it's its own beast, with an interesting story and a great villain. Fantastic soundtrack too. Visually a little dated of course, but no so much as to get in the way of the story. It's just too bad the iTunes UK version is SD, while the iTunes US version is in HD.
  • The Black Hole - A trip back in time

    By D Cook
A delight to find on iTunes at last, this Disney classic is in a league of its own. Existentialism and evisceration from The Mouse House? An ending that doesn't quite match the typical Hollywood formula? it's no wonder this film stuck in the memories of many kids expecting another Star Wars. This was something different, more challenging. Now the kids have grown up, this is a fun trip down memory lane. Don't freak out if all you hear is music without images for the first five minutes - your film isn't defective, this is an overture by composer John Barry - The Black Hole was one of the last films to have one. It's not a perfect film by any means; the first few minutes of clunky exposition soon give way to the fun and adventure we all remember and love.
