Maria (Naomi Watts) and Henry (Ewan McGregor) are on a family Christmas vacation in Thailand, enjoying their beachfront resort when their world is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to them, a huge earthquake across the ocean has triggered a massive tsunami... one of the most devastating natural catastrophes on record. This is their story.

What an extraordinary film. A very convincing drama played out on a panoramic stage without curtains, delivering the horror that is based upon an unbelievable historic event, portraying just how suddenly a world can be turned upside down in less than ten minutes ... a world without hope that uncovers one miracle after another.
  • A moving and triumphant film

How anyone could call this film 'bad' is beyond me. Surely films are meant to move us and to fill us with emotion and empathy - which this does from start to finish. In no way is the tragedy of the situation ignored, but rather the triumph of hope and determination of the human spirit to never give up despite the appalling odds is shown. That and the power of Love and the bond between loving parents and children. You would have to be a very hard hearted human being to watch this and not shed a few tears. Best film I have seen for a long time.

Sad yet fascinating. The actors portrait the real life people very well and overall it's just great

What an amazing movie, totally recommend. It's very sad what happened in 2004, this is a small insight to what happened to 1000's of people. Worth watching.

So everyone knows the story of the Tsunami. Seen lots of footage and documentaries. This film however is so good it's like you don't know the story. At the back of your mind it is like yes this is a real story and people actually went through this but its not mawkish or disrespectful to those that died. Just very good acting and actually a very simple story at the heart of the film. Very well done. Gripped my attention for the duration.

The film is called The Impossible. As we can't imagine the impossible .... Until it happens to you. I was in Thailand in 2004 when the Tsunami hit, therefore it is possible. (the devastation and heartbreak will always be with me) The story is good and I'm sure we are ALL agreed that they all survived. But A LOT of families didn't make it home. Everyone in Thailand lost someone.
