12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

  • A truly horrific, shocking masterpiece.

This movie truly shows the horrors of early slavery. Chiwetel Ejiofor portrayal was brutally amazing. The film itself truly is isn’t meant for the faint hearted, but it is needed and necessary. Humanity has truly come a long way, with this film being released at the same time we had our first black president m, but we still have some ways to go before we are all 100% accepted and acknowledged.
  • Too much

    By TeeJayCTom
For me the film included too much graphic scenes of the slaves being abused. I think it over does on this part and makes the whole viewing experience rather morose and the subject matter actually treated indelicately.
  • Amazing movie

This movie is amazing testament to what people went through and is a heart breaking/warming depiction of one such story of traffic misfortune and surrefring.

Amazing film, amazing performances and an ending that causes a powerful emotional response every time I watch it.
  • Magnificent - essential but challenging viewing

No-one could call this an easy watch. Being confronted by what man can do to man, the darker side of human nature, is tough but necessary. The film holds few punches with brutal violence and little sentimentality. As a reminder of the shameful history of slavery in the US and UK it should be essential viewing for every teenager. In contrast to the content, visually it is beautifully filmed, and intelligently scripted and paced. Highly recommended.
  • Meh

If you want an understanding of the horrendous cruelty slaves faced read The Black Jacobins by CLR James. This film is average really and I sense it only won an oscar because people were too scared to award it anywhere else.

  • What's all the hype about?

A good film well made and really good acting. However I can't see what all the hype was about, it's not a great film, just good.

This movie was an emotional rollacoaster! I must add that it's not a movie for the weak hearted, but it's worth taking a look at.
