  • Disappointing follow-up

This was one of my most anticipated albums of 2017 because I loved their debut, but what a crashing disappointment. The riffs are still there, but they're not as catchy and most of the songs are pretty weak in comparison to the first long player. A poor sophomore effort, in my humble opinion. Definitely not the essential purchase I thought I would be getting...

  • Great album

With only a two piece band, royal blood know how to smash out a great song. I'm a drummer myself and I find the drumming inspiring, the techniques are great and the guitar playing is on point. Great album, recommend it to anyone that loves a bit of pop rock πŸ‘

  • Fresh but familiar, short but sweet

First off the album is pretty strong overall, with some really great grooves, interesting big layered riffs and some really catchy vocal lines. I love the overall 'modern day old fashioned rock' vibe. I feel the album works well, song arrangement seems to work, the new songs interested me more than the single releases, but probably because I hadn't heard them before. Production has changed, being generally refined. Feels moody, tight and sexy, less live, focussing more on grooves while keeping that big sound they're known for... New vocal production techniques with a lot of layering/refined vocal parts and more background details going on than songs from the first album. The downsides I've found are firstly the album length, which is a little short for my liking and means you'll probably hit the end before expecting it... And secondly, I love Queens of the StoneAge so it's not that big an issue, but I feel like a fair amount of this album is almost shamelessly influenced by them, some of it sounding a little bit too similar to the other group at times... It's a strong second album, the album is very dark and moody while remaining quite varied and interesting to listen to, which is all that matters at the end of the day. If you love big riffs and really funky big drum grooves, you can't go wrong with this one.
